The Greater Elkridge Community Association (GECA) is scheduled to host the Board of Education candidates for a forum on Thursday in Elkridge that revolves around overcrowding in Howard County Public Schools.
GECA wrote in an announcement for the forum that a redistricting plan to fill a new elementary school on Ducketts Lane in Elkridge to alleviate overcrowding is not a long-term solution.
"Now is your chance to meet the Board of Education candidates, who we will elect in November, and ask them tough questions about how they plan to solve these problems," wrote GECA in the announcement.
Patch will be liveblogging from the forum on Thursday evening. The forum will start at 7 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 6274 Montgomery Road, Elkridge. Tweet from the forum using the hashtag #HoCoBOE.
This will be the second forum for candidates running for the Howard County Board of Education.
At the first one on Sept. 24, all six candidates—incumbents Ellen Giles and Janet Siddiqui as well as challengers David Gertler, Jackie Scott, Ann De Lacy and Bob Ballinger—appeared.
At the first forum each candidate answered a wide range of questions, from who they would most like to work with, to high school grading policies. They also briefly addressed issues in specific regions including Elkridge, according to a report from Explore Howard.
From the field of six, only three candidates will be elected to the Board on Nov. 2.
What issues are most important to you in determining which candidate you will voter for this November?

So, GECA thought it would be a good idea to put a school board "forum" up against the VP debate on Thursday night? I think the could have picked a better day for this.

We actually went through a number of possible dates and they all conflicted with either other school system activities or other candidate forums, not to mention Thursday night football and the MLB playoffs. The VP debate starts at 9 pm, so you should be able to attend the forum and get home in time for most of the debate. We plan to end by 9 pm.
