Howard County Police reported they made four DUI arrests on Wednesday, the 4th of July, and that no one was arrested at the Columbia Lakefront celebration.
It was a noticeable turn from last year's festivities when 18 people were arrested for DUI over the 4th of July weekend and a juvenile was arrested after a fight broke out at the lakefront.
About 20,000 to 25,000 people attended this year's celebration at the Lakefront, according to Phil Bryan, superintendent of recreation activities for the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks. That number is less than the 30,000 to 50,000 that were expected to attend.
Bryan wrote in an email that the low turnout may have been the result of the heat and threatening inclement weather. Temperatures at the fireworks reached up to 90 degrees.
The show ended around 10 p.m. Police said they had cleared the roads within 45 minutes and had no traffic issues, according to police spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn.
