Friday the 13th: Patch Editors ‘Fess Up' on Superstitions

Join in the thread—What freaks you out?

There’s a common superstition in the news business.

You must NEVER say these friendly words to a colleague covering the weekend shift: “Hope it’s a quiet one for you.”

Uttering the word “quiet” next to the word “weekend shift” inevitably means there will be widespread brush fires, police will stop a man dressed as Batman on the beltway and/or customers will get into fights with cleaning products at Walmart.

And yes, I feel freaked out just writing the words down now.

It is almost the weekend, after all. And, frighteningly--oh dear--it's Friday the 13th.

The belief that Friday the 13th brings bad karma comes from long-standing tradition that the sixth day of the week and the number 13 are bad luck enough, so combining them can't be good.

Some research has shown that just the fear of bad things happening on Friday the 13th means more bad things do happen on Friday the 13th. One study apparently showed there were more hospitalizations on the day.

According to urbanlegends.com, there's a name for those of us with an irrational fear of Friday the 13th: paraskevidekatriaphobics. Have just a run-of-the-mill fear of the day? You might have friggatriskaidekaphobia.

Apparently it all started in the 19th century. In Spanish-speaking countries, the paranoia is focused on Tuesdays.

We could go on.

But, instead, let's poke fun at people and their irrational fears.

We'll start.

Below, we're asking Patch editors and guest editors in this corner of Maryland to share their superstitions—journalism-related or not.

We also want them to knock on wood several times throughout the day to mitigate the fact I just wrote “quiet” next to the word “weekend” in this post.

Readers—join in, too! Is it black cats, spiders—something special you do before each plane ride to ensure a safe flight? What are your top superstitions? How are you handling the pressure today?

Oh, man, I have Patch weekend duty! Thanks Lisa, for jinxing my much-needed days "off." I might not have friggatriskaidekaphobia, but I've got 'frigga' something. I'll be in a fetal position for the rest of the day to avoid my biggest fear -- overexposure to donuts. Especially the ones at Kensington donuts. I better go up there now for more "coffee."

In true weird whitney fashion, I LOVE Friday the 13th and I've had some good luck on those days. The last warm-weather Friday the 13th that I remember, May 2008, I received two job offers and spent a flawless evening dining and dancing with friends in New York. (The cold-weather Friday the 13ths, where you're huddled in your apartment for warmth, obviously don't count in my mind.) It may be tempting fate, but I have high hopes for decent weather and fun tonight, too.

You're not alone—this Huffington Post blogger says it's a lucky day for women and was not spun into something horrifying until the "patriarchal revolution." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/donna-henes/friday-13th_b_1418812.html Personally, I always associate Friday the 13th with my family's first dog, the late Ponce de Leon Janney. He was born on a Friday the 13th in the '90s and was a little strange but in a way that made you just love him more.

Aside from the occasional picking up of a penny or the blowing of an eyelash, I'm not very superstitious. Some members of my family can't help themselves with superstitions, though. From right-side-up horseshoes to wearing green on St. Paddy's Day, my father, aunts and uncles don't like to tempt the universe...

I'm not superstituous, but I think Friday the 13th is cool opportunity for everyone to let their hair down and have fun. I'll be performing tonight with one of my bands in a garage that was converted into a venue on a farm with quite a few other bands. That's my kind of Friday the 13th, although it will technically be Saturday the 14th by the time we hit the stage.

I think the only thing that really freaks me out about Friday the 13th is the movie (Friday the 13th). I saw it when I was very young (too young mom!) and to this day the music and image of a man in a hockey mask (wielding an axe of course) put me over the edge.

I would be knocking on wood right now if I weren't busy throwing salt over my shoulder and avoiding the ladder in front of my entryway. I never THINK I am superstitious, but when something like Friday the 13th comes around, I do hold my breath and hope for the best. My daughter, a soccer player, knocks her fists against her head (OW!) and my son, a protestant tennis player, crosses himself before a match. Go figure!

No superstitions here. Just an unnatural fear of large black crickets. I have a feeling telling this to the world is going to come back and get me some day.

Speaking of being put over the edge, the photo of the cats is kind of freaking me out.

I don't mean to sound overwrought, but I am resigned to the fact that I have some terrible luck. A sheet of ice fell off a roof and totaled my car. I've actually boarded a flight that switched its gate last minute and wound up in Massechusetts (not my final destination). My degree was lost in the mail for 9 months. I'll always get the "defective" debit card or cable modem. Nevertheless, none of these things have happened on Friday the 13th, so here's to pushing my luck.

I decided to take my driver's license test on Dec. 13, 1996—a Friday. I decided that all I needed to do was pass the test on that day, and I'd know for the rest of my life that there was clearly nothing wrong with Friday the 13th. I passed my test, and have been free of Friday-the-13th fear ever since.

So, if I make it through today unscathed, I'm going to adopt that philosophy!

I've always avoided black cats crossing my path. Ironically, a cat broke one of my mirrors a few months back. Does that me seven years bad luck for me or the cat?

I love Friday the 13th! I met my husband on the Friday the 13th before valentine's day and that was also the anniversary of my parents first date!

black cats get a bad rap. They are just as lovable as other cats and haven't brought me any bad luck. From Sanctuary of hope's website .....

The top ten reasons to adopt a black cat:
10. You'll save $$ on their Halloween costumes.
9. You can always find them in the snow.
8. Holding a black cat is very slimming.
7. Black cats will match any decor.
6. A lint brush isn't required for a black-tie affair.
5. When you love a black cat, luck is on your side.
4. Black cats are like onyx, a beautiful gem.
3. Hey, they don't care what color you are!
2. Love knows no color.
And the number one reason to adopt a black cat...
1. They are the least likely to be adopted.

Oh, so sad. My beloved Bea, the cat, was black. She lived 20 years. I had no idea there was an actual stigma in potential owners' eyes.

The seven-years-of-bad-luck curse after breaking a mirror has always made me wonder. If I count back the years from the two times I broke one, I can see some pattern of misfortune. And about black cats—I've had two of them, and haven't noticed any bad luck from that. And they crossed my path many times!

Thirteen is a baker's dozen, the number of diners at the Last Supper, the number of turns in a hangman's noose, and the age at which a Jewish youth can serve in a minyan. You can cut a bagel into 13 pieces with three slices. I'm not superstitious, knock on wood. And if I had hair, I would let it down and have fun today.

Chelsea -- I'm a cat lover and I love black cats. I had one as a child who was so, so sweet, I will never forget her. And my kitty at home is mostly black with some orange, and she rocks. :)
