Groundbreaking for Laurel Mall Redevelopment Slated For Today

The final days of Laurel Mall are near as a groundbreaking ceremony commencing its redevelopment into the Town Centre at Laurel is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Mayor Craig Moe, the Laurel Council, and Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker are among attendees to the invite only event.
Greenberg Gibbons Commercial, which partnered with the site's owner, Somera Capital Management, to redevelop the mall, plans to demolish the existing structure and turn it into an open-air town center. Greenberg announced the mall was pursuing retailers Harris Teeter, Regal Cinemas, and Burlington Coat Factory to anchor the mall.

Plans for the mall’s redevelopment had seemingly stalled after an announcement last year that the city asked the developer to delay the demolition of the mall’s parking lot during the holiday season. By May 1 the mall had officially closed, leaving only the U.S. Post Office and Burlington Coat Factor open.

From the looks of things, it was a pretty long invite list. Nevertheless, the developer seems to have an aggressive plan slated for the mall in the coming months. What stores are you guys hoping to see at the new development?

At one point, I believe there was talk of ground being broke on that project this year, but I am not certain if that is still suppose to happen. Keep in mind that larger department stores will likely favor Konterra over the redeveloped town center because Konterra is envisioned to be much larger and grand.

The renderings look a lot like Bowie Town Center. Mostly single story buildings surrounded by parking lots, with some apartments behind it. I guess the developers couldn't come up with something a little more innovative that would stand out. Hopefully the store selection will at least be a reason to go visit.
