Have a Gun? Police Will Buy it for $100
Howard County police will hold a gun buyback program on March 16.
Howard County police are offering residents $100 for their gun if they bring it to the Dorsey Building in Columbia on March 16.
Guns dropped off at the event will be destroyed and funds to pay for them will come from money seized in drug investigations, according to police.
“This is truly about safety,” said Police Chief William J. McMahon, in a statement. “If you have a gun in your home that you no longer want, we will help you eliminate the possibility that it could be used in a way you never intended.”
Those participating in the event will remain anonymous, and police said they will not ask for identification at the event. Police will buy any complete firearm, but not gun parts or pellet/BB guns.
Residents who bring a gun to the event have been asked to keep the gun, unloaded and locked, inside their trunk and a police officer will take it out while the gun’s owner remains in his or her vehicle.
Individuals may turn in up to three firearms, according to police.
In addition, those who attend the event will receive a free gun lock, even if they don’t turn in a weapon, said police.
If police find a stolen gun, they will complete an investigation to see if it has been used in a crime, and if not, will attempt to return it to its rightful owner.
The event takes place on Saturday, March 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dorsey Building located at 9250 Bendix Road, Columbia.

I am seriously looking forward to this event!!!!! I have what is essentially gun shaped scrap metal in the form of several worn out single shot .22 rifles that I will turn in to pick up a new semi auto handgun.
The funds to pay for this come from the drug seized assets account, which is supposed to help crackheads get back on their feet but that Ken Ulman uses as his public relations slush fund (paying for proms and gun buy backs).
All they are going to get is junk. I'm sure they'll have plenty of AR15s and AK47s on display as if anyone would be dumb enough to turn those in. But the photo op will certainly be amusing and liberals will think they made us safer. Everybody wins!

I'm sure if you asked a street cop, they'd tell you themselves that this is stupid. Only someone playing the policitical game would be dumb enough to think this will do anything so keep anyone safer.
I just hope the police are honest enough not to take any firearms with historical value, like if grandma tries to turn in dead grandpa's Luger that he brought back from Germany.

I lock my doors for the safety of criminals who may want to illegally enter, not for my safety.
This program makes no one safer and any belief that it does is fantasy.

Mack,
I commend HoCo police for there work too, but buybacks are for show and serve no real purpose other than removing old, possibly faulty weapons from circulation.

Thank you for the scrap metal idea. I have a couple of relics also and have been recently shopping for an ambi semi-auto pistol that both I (the lefty) and my wife could use. The price diff between the top two contenders is just about exactly $200. Now about that 40 day cooling off period...

Turning in a gun because you fear criminals having them, is like getting a vasectomy because the neighbors have too many kids!

I will be there and drive anyone with a good collectable or valuable firearm to the nearest FFL dealer so I can purchase it for a fair price, not the $100 the cops are trading for it. See you there.

Couldn't some one have reported their guns stolen, turned then in and collect $300, and then get their guns back?
