Jack Johnson Headed to Prison Saturday
The former Prince George's County Executive must start his federal prison term in North Carolina Saturday.
Time has run out for former Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson to remain a free man.
Johnson is scheduled to begin his 87-month sentence in federal prison today, Feb. 18, in Butner, NC, Jeffrey Harding, one of Johnson’s attorneys told The Washington Post.
Johnson and his wife, Leslie, were both indicted on federal charges in November 2010. Johnson pleaded guilty to conspiracy, extortion and witness evidence tampering after admitting he accepted cash, airfare and other gifts in exchange for changing laws and results of inspections in May 2011 and his wife pleaded guilty to detroying evidence, after she infamously stuffed $79,000 in her underwear and tried flushing a $100,000 check down the toliet. She later resigned from her county council seat.
Johnson will spend his days on a regimented schedule, according to The Post—waking up early, eating meals in the mess hall and working a job in the prison's kitchen or laundry room for only 40 cents a day.
But attorneys told The Post that Johnson will be housed in one of the nicer prisons:
“It is one of the better camps in the system,” said Herb Hoelter, a Baltimore attorney who advises people who are about to head to prison to The Post. “It has always been one of the crown jewels of the system.” Said Alan Ellis, a San Francisco attorney with many clients in the system: “The bottom line is he hit the inmate lottery.”
His new home is also where Bernie Madoff, Jonathan Pollard and Carmine Persico serve time, according to The Washingon Post.
Although he will be able to speak to some people over the phone or over email, communication between Johnson and his wife will remain minimal, the Post reported.
Leslie Johnson is scheduled to begin her 12-month sentence at Alderson, the West Virginia prison that housed Martha Stewart, on March 9.

Good ridden, Jack. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. I have nothing but ill-will towards you and your wife's lying/cheating/stealing asses. Karma is great. Enjoy the ride, jackass.

It just seems to me that there ought to be some mandatory "contribution" that folks have to make towards their jail time when they still have an annual income.

Leslie should go along for the ride. Good month to celebrate the ugly history that they have generated for PG county.

i don't think anyone believes these two are any more than the tip of the iceberg in Prince George's County . Nonetheless, good riddance to at least these two slimeballs.

Jack and Leslie both did crimes in Prince Georges County; therefore, they should serve their time in a PG County jail. Why do they both get to go to luxury jails??? Who is paying for their transportation to the out of state jails?? They should not get any special treatment -- a criminal is a criminal.

I agree-why does he get a choice of prisons at all? He hurt every citizen of Prince George's County and many more, not to mention the innocent people who are tainted just because they unknowlingly worked for a crook. There are others in normal prisons who haven't done anywhere near what he did and he gets this privilege-is anything fair anymore?

I just don't understand why it has taken this long for both he and his wife to begin their prison sentences? The rest of the Country is tried and sentenced and it begins immediately. With all the illegal monies they are both making ... it needs to be STOPPED and given back to P.G. Country where it was stolen from. I can't figure out the justice system - I guess it just depends upon who you are and who you know? Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I worked with his "grassroots" group in his initial campaign for County Executive. I still cannot believe how he and his wife pulled the wool over our eyes. Given the fact that they both had well paying jobs and wanted for nothing, I believe that they got caught up in old fashion greed. What a terrible way to end your career and in fact your life. Everything they worked for is gone. What a waste!!!!

I hope your are correct in the fact of them ending their careers, but I doubt it myself look just over the county line and the fools in DC keep putting crackhead Barry back in office, he owes the federal government over $250,000.00 but nobody will even garnish his wages like the ywould yours or mine.

The entire County Council, as well as anyone who served on it during Jackson's terms, should also be thoroughly investigated.

There is a surprise... a corrupt politician "hit the inmate lottery” and gets a place in the "one of the crown jewels of the system". He should go to a real p[rison where he needs to fear for his safety like all people he convicted during his time as states attorney.

Jack Johnson was involved in numerous felonious activities at some point that we'll likely know when it began during his tenure as an elected public official.
In return he gets rewarded by going to a country club prison like Medoff and Martha Stewart?
Find him a spot....temporarily....in a medium security Federal prison and transfer him to one far away from Maryland for at least half of his sentence. He's a thief just like anyone who robs a 7/11 or a Giant.
The only difference is he knew how to work even the prison system to his advantage.
Equal justice for all, huh......what a great ideal, now if it would only be put into practice by a Federal judge with some fortitude.

Jack was framed. Leslie didn't stuff real money in her drawers, it was only Monopoly money. They were conducting a sting to catch crooked FBI, CIA, and AFL/CIO agents. Honest.

They should be made to pay restitution to the residents and the employees of the county. The employees are under a dark cloud and suffering the consequences of his actions.

Any elected official found guilty of corruptiion of any kind must be tried for treason and put away in a real deal prison for the rest of their natural lives.
The country is teetering on the brink of failure due almost exclusively to greed and corruption. If this continues we'll continue to slide and a very bloody revolution will be the only option.

I remember JJ tough on crime stance he took in southern PG county and how he wanted even the innocent to make plea deals too boost his image. He is a joke, disappointment and a liar. I voted for this crook and believed him. I am disgusted and embarrassed as a county resident from birth. His wife should of went to Upper Marlboro and he should of went to FBP in Kentucky where he sent many PG youths who where young and impressionable. What about you JJ?

Can someone pease explain why some prisons are more posh than others and why big time criminals get better treatment? His retirement should be revoked and returned to the county coffers. He and his wife violated the peole's trust and does not deserve the benefits of 20 years of "service".
