Laurel Shopping Center Sign Bids Farewell

1960s relic to be replaced this week.

Laurel residents driving along Route 1 approaching the Laurel Shopping Center may notice some major work near the center this week as its longtime sign is replaced.

According to Federal Reality, owner of the center, the sign has perched above Route 1 since the 1960s when a gallon of gas was only 35 cent. The sign was considered state-of-the-art at the time, according to Lisa Geiger, marketing manager for the site owner.

As work crews began taking down the sign this week, its final message to Laurel reads: “The '60s Called And They Want This Sign Back…”

The new sign will be more 2012, Geiger said, and will likely display newer tenants at the center. In recent months, LA Fitness and a Shoe City have filled vacancies left by Toys “R” Us and Famous Footwear.
