Police, NAACP to Give Away Gift Cards in Exchange for Guns

Organizers are hoping Saturday's event in Laurel will help reduce gun violence.

Prince George's County police will host a "Gift Cards for Guns" event this Saturday, Dec. 15 in Laurel.

In an effort to reduce gun violence, the PGPD has partnered with the NAACP to accept firearms from residents in exchange for $100 gift cards.

Guns will be received from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church (601 8th Street in Laurel). They do not need to be functional, police said.

If you intend to surrender one or more firearms, place them unloaded in the trunk of your car. An uniformed police officer will greet you at the door and provide more direction. Unwanted ammunition may be submitted as well.

This is the third such event in 2012. Police said 300 guns have already been surrendered this year in the county.

For more information, contact the Prince George’s County Police Department at 301-772-4710.

Shouldn't they run the serial number first and see if the gun has been stolen, before giving the person a $100.00, or check and see if the weapon has be used in a crime?

Probably a good investigative tool to check serials, but the goal here is to get the guns off the streets and out of perps hands. Not sure would think it's better to leave the weapon out on the streets (because possessor is afraid to particpate as thinks will be arrested) - better to get them off the streets and perhaps use the info as an investigative tool later (I'm assuming they record ID from the perps). Suspect they don't want to publicize exactly what they plan with this.
