Speak Out: Has Memorial Day Become National Barbeque Day?
Have cookouts and pool days eclipsed the true meaning of the holiday?
The question spilled out over Facebook, Patch and other sites over the Memorial Day weekend.
Has Memorial Day lost its meaning?
The question has taken a few manifestations.
A picture of a woman lying at the foot of a gravestone has been circulating the web with the caption “Memorial Day. In case you thought it was National Barbeque Day.”
And commenters under a Patch story about barbeque recipes underscored the message as well.
“Memorial Day is a day to reflect and remember those who sacrificed life, limb and mind to ensure the freedom we have today,” wrote Lorraine Kelly. “It is not about sales, trips to the beach and barbeques. It is fine to enjoy the above as long as you acknowledge those who sacrificed so that you can.”
