Speak Out: Will You Boycott Denny's, Applebees and Papa John's?
The franchise owners of these popular chains are making big changes to offset costs of Obamacare, but it's causing some customers to rethink which businesses they'll support.
Several franchise owners of popular restaurant chains say that the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare will increase costs for small business owners—and in order to offset costs they are adding surcharges to bills, threatening layoffs and more.
According to the Huffington Post, John Metz, a Florida-based Denny's franchise owner, is adding a 5 percent surcharge to customers' bills to offset costs for healthcare.
Apple-Metro CEO Zane Tankel, who owns more than 40 Applebee's chains in the metro New York area, slammed Obamacare on Fox Business Network, Huffington Post reported, stating he would not hire any more employees and may cut the hours of current employees.
But a Twitter campaign has already begun against Papa John's after CEO John Schnatter’s said the chain would increase prices to offset costs related to the Affordable Care Act. Protestors are asking Americans to support local pizza chains over Papa John's.
So what do you think? Will you boycott these businesses for their actions against employees and customers? Or you think that small business owners are suffering due to Obamacare? Tell us in the comments.

Ridiculous! Show me the ARTHIMETIC! How much will it really cost them to offer insurance to their employees? Surely it will not be close to what they will pay in legal damages if a customer should become ill due to an infection, disease, or sickness passed on by one of their employees. I am certain you are correct that when company expenses increase they pass the costs to the consumer, business 101. The rub here is that although I don't "boycott" those companies when they raise prices, because I understand supply and demand. Most of those companies don't publicly announce employee layoffs and cutbacks in hours just to express their sour grapes for their guy losing an election and in the process publicly punish (read as: screw) the american worker. I can find another pizza place. Maybe I'll just throw my support ($$) to the local restaurants who quietly respect their workers, and the will of the american people, and do the right thing.

To Bob Johnson: As a Director at PriceWaterhouseCoopers i can tell you companies like Dennys have set aside millions of dollars in advance of any rise in costs in uncontrollable costs such as fuel, healthcare, food costs going up ue to drought, etc. The CEO does not need to suddenly add a surcharge every time something costs more. This is a Republican who probably donated generously to Karl Rove and now is feeling cheated.

Exactly, for each time you order NOT at PAPA JOHNS but instead at an alternative that is a responsible business (who wants to provide decent jobs and likes health care for its employees), the comeptitiveness of good businesses in America goes up, the bad businesses get punished. Then the exploited employees at the irresponsible company can go get a job at a responsible employer. Then when they have health care at the new place, they will take less sick days, be more productive, likely stay there longer, decreasing turnover costs. Plus, taxpayers etc. no longer pay the high uninsured emergency treatment costs for those without helath care since everyone now can get preventative care - which is cheaper. wah-la...a win-win situation...operating in the free market dynamics of supply and demand - exactly the fundamentals of a good boycott! Let it be cearly known who are the bad apples - Papa Johns, Applebees....

Michael you need to look up boycotts in your American History books. Boycotts help people. The CEO doesn't want to pay his employees insurance & keeps their hrs low so he doesn't have to give them benefits as they are considered part-time. He also is the one that advertises constantly that he is going to give away 2 million pizzas this year. If he can give away millions of pizzas and lives in a 40,000 sq ft mansion with a 22-car garage, I hope he does go out of business & other pizza places will hire & provide insurance.

The comments made by these CEO's reflect their misguided political opinions and soundbyte mentality. More than likely they worship at the alters of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and the vacuous twits of FOX. "We the People" (the first words of the US Constitution) will decide whether to punish these entrepreneurs for their greed by voting every time we reach into our wallets. I have a feeling that when push comes to shove, these blustering fools will back down because customers will simply not patronize companies that say "screw you" and smart business owners will turn this into a marketing advantage by promoting economic patriotism.

John Schnatter didn't just build a successful company on his own; his apparent success was on the back of employees that help build the brand by working hard, and Schnatter felt they didn’t deserve any coverage options for healthcare, that they weren’t worth it, worth factoring in this very human need into their budget and cost way before now. his 'preferred' employees are covered but not the hourly workers that live day to day based off the tips and the dismel hourly wage. I am not just boycotting this selfish fool but I refuse to contribute to any company that associates with this company. I choose to spend my money at companies where the leaders have a moral center and that is not Papa John.

Just like walmart, these companies not only want us to pay for health insurance but the fair wages of employees. Their employees have to rely on us to pay tips to even come close to a living wage. The companies could care less, our tax dollars can cover the difference. Its time they quit short changing their employees, move into this century and offer a living wage with benifits. My money and my tips will to to the companies that suipport their employees by paying a decent wage and benifits. This is unfair to employees and to taxpayors. .

Boycott. Of course not. I will move all of my dining to any restaurant operator that passes the 5% Obamacare costs to their customers. Even if the restaurant isn't one I'd normally selct. Tack on the 5% Obamacare surcharge and I'll gladly pay it. I will simply then reduce the gratuity to the server by the same amount. My total cost are flat. The owner gets the 5% surcharge to pay his tax. The employee gets 5% less in gratuity. Now that voter is held accountable for the voting decision they made. Folks, this is how it works. Increase our taxes and we will find a way to let those who made the bad decision be held accountable.

I do my best to treat people in the manner I would wish them to treat me. I actually do care about the well being of people who serve me in restaurants and stores, etc. It sounds like you do not. Businesses always pass on extra costs to the customer, Is this something new? NO!
BUT! when they start threatening the livelihoods of their employees, and belittle the intelligence of at least half of the population that is behind this REAL attempt to take healthcare to a different level, Then I as a consumer will take my business elsewhere, as I am sure once they see the ignorance of their ways through their wallet, they will come sniveling back to the table with the taste of athletes foot on their tongues.

Absolutely! I started boycotting Papa John's when that greedy prick John Schnatter started his rant months ago about adding small change to the cost of pizza to cover healthcare for his employees. Now that Obama has been re-elected his going to reduce the hours of these same employees that allow him and his family to live their lives in obscene wealth. Besides, who would want to eat any food at Papa John's, Applebee's, DQ's and Denny's when sick employees are forced to work sick because they have no healthcare or even sick leave?? Well, if people will be losing jobs because of the boycott, then all things being equal, the companies who ARE offering health care to their employees will be gaining a lot more customers and consequently be in the position to offer increased employment. ON WITH THE BOYCOTT!

So Denny's is adding a 5% surcharge to help offset the cost of healthcare for their employees? Better idea. A company willing to come up with solution that will ensure that the health and welfare of their employees and (by extension) their customers without affecting their bottom line, imho, has made a sound decision.

I will now support Denny's, Applebees, and Papa John's. I never have before, but it's just ridiculous that you people feel so entitled. The owners of the businesses are in business to MAKE A PROFIT. That's what business is. If obamacare increases the costs for businesses to operate, why the hell would prices remain the same?
It is a simple concept that seems to go right over the majority's head. Sad.

Apparently, u do not understand. Yes, they want to make a profit, but, they do not have to mistreat their employees just so they can live in mansions, etc. Papa John's runs an ad constantly telling how he will be giving away millions of pizzas. Let's see.............maybe he could give away fewer pizzas, still live in his huge mansion, make millions AND give his employees healthcare. What a concept!

Rick, go ahead. For myself I will still send my business Denny's way but Applebees & Papa John are now off my list. Of course profit is the reason for business and owners are granted the right to make financial decisions in their best interest, which is why the way Denny's handled it is the better way. You're entitled to your opinion but for myself and many others, given the choice between paying 50 cents more for every $10 spent vs an increased threat of 3 days in bed with fever is a no brainer.

@Rick Jones - exactly what do you mean by "you people"?
do you realize that although these obscenly wealthy business owners have the right to make a living, but to do so on the backs of those that made them rich is just wrong. Further, I'm sure they and their friends aren't eating at their Papa John's, Applebee's, Denny's etc.! Seriously? Did any of that go over your head?

^^THIS!
People should realized that a company will make up that 5% one way or another. These are just companies that are giving everyone a window into HOW they plan to do so. No business owner(obama voter or not) will be taking a 5% hit to their wallet. The reason they own successful businesses is because they know how to manage money/costs, that's what they do. Low level workers need to just deal with that. That's why you are on the bottom. You don't like it, take the risk and be the one who owns the business.

It's not about BOYCOTTING businesses that oppose the "tax hike." It's about SUPPORTING other businesses that place the well-being of their employees above their own profits.
If these companies are operating such that a slight increase in employee health costs (which will lead to higher productivity, by the way) will make them insolvent, they're running their business incorrectly to begin with, and the standard model of capitalism will run its course upon them.

I haven't eaten at Denny's in 20 years after the staff of a Denny's in Nebraska refused to service an African American friend because they "didn't want his kind in their restaurant." Denny's corporate of 20 years ago gave the young man no response to his complaint about refusal of service. I'm sure they'd now say "we aren't like that," and others would say "lol you're boycotting Denny's over something that ancient?!?" but it's looking like Denny's is full of fail, so I'm feeling pretty happy about my decision to avoid them. My boycott continues.
I don't eat at Applebee's because I think their food isn't worth bothering about, there are so many better options out there. So, that one is easy.
My husband likes (or liked) Papa Johns, I told him about all of this, and the boycott is ON. Like with Denny's, when I boycott, I boycott hard. John Richguy would have to do some convincing penance to get one penny from me in the future. I am 36 years old, and capable of not having Papa Johns until I die, no matter how long that is. My household has already ordered pizzas since our boycott started . . . we got Pizza Hut. It was good. Buh-bye, John!

I have a really good capitalist idea. Start shorting Denny's stock. It's bound to drop over the next couple of months. In the mid $4 range, so it's cheap enough to made a good short sale move...haha

I am for one will not boycott any business that tells the truth, what did people think was going to happen? When gasoline goes up, so does food pricing, when there is a rise in corn prices everything goes up, these businesses are just telling the reason prices will be going up, every business is going to do this, too all of you that think it is greed, go open your own company and do it your way, if you think the 5% on a pizza is something wait till you see what is going to happen to your healthcare, thanks to the last election Thanksgiving, will now be renamed Thankstaking.

Well then. How about business tell the truth that they want their welfare in the form of tax relief. Now thats Thanksgimmy!.Fuckin bums. They don't want to pay a living wage or healthcare. And call people underclass bums. Then they need to pay taxes. As far as price increases go wages should go up to. Cost of living or no one will be able to buy the unhealthy shit they sell. But that may be good in a way.People will be healthier. This boycott will make for a healthier country.Thank god for the change that has come..

When business owners live in absurd wealth while their employees--the ones who do the cement pounding labor while smiling and taking care of customers can't afford basic medical needs of family...and live meagerly to basic modestly, there is a huge problem. The problem is not Obama. It is greed. It is lack of morals. That the laws are even an issue to these companies should be the embarassing issue to these owners. Count me in with the boycotts.

Disgusting what Denny's and Papa Johns have threatened to do to their workers. These CEOs have made huge profits off the backs of their minimum wage employees. These are cruel people and a very sad sign of the selfish times we live in. The elite categorize the rest as "moochers" in a very transparent attempt to grab all they can, regardless to what's actually earned and fair to those who work hard for these bastard companies and ask only a fair shake in return. I don't wish to see our country revert to a lopssided, medieval value system... Count me in to boycott these awful companies and all who choose to stand against fairness and decency in business.

I will be patronizing them. It's about time that people stand up against communism in this country! And yes, they are capitalists. We are a capitalist country, last time I checked. If you don't like it, go somewhere else instead of voting in communist presidents!!!

Bob Jones You can patronize any place u want to. If u think it is communism to stand up for workers' rights, maybe u should move to a communist country & wake up. Anyway, Americans stood up for what was right & the rich backed down as soon as they found out their childish acts were affecting their bottom line. They back down and apologized. smile

I have lived in a communist country and believe me, it sucks- that is why I am against America going down that road as our political leaders are currently taking us. You think that you have a right to health care- that is a communist brainwashing. You have to work for health care. And for all wages. That's the way that capitalism works. And that is why we have liberty from the government. When the government gives you everything, they also control everything. I'm sure if you want to be fat and lazy and sit on your butt all day long watching TV, you wouldn't mind that!

The Gov't doesn't give me healthcare - we pay for it. Apparently bob jones hasn't even read about Obamacare or anything to do with it. If u lived in a communist country & u think that's what our country is doing, u do have a problem - a serious problem. The Gov't hasn't give me anything. When I rec'd money from the Gov't it was because I worked for Dept of Defense for 26 yrs. duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh You need to take a course in American History and Economics.

It is not the government's job to take wealth from the wealthy and redistribute it to others. that's called marxism. Apparently you have all been drinking the liberal kool-aid for way too long. The government's job in taxation is to use the money to provide for the well-being of the nation. Our government has gone far, far beyond that. And don't try to make an issue of religious freedom (companies who are being forced to pay for abominable practices like abortion drugs) into an issue of rich CEOs. You are changing the subject!!!
bob jones
12:21 pm on Sunday, December 9, 2012
You will agree with anything President Obama does, including forcing the strongest marxist, anti-Christian efforts on America in history (just look at his endorsement of homosexuality, the democratic convention voting NO to have God in their party line, forcing taxpayer funded abortion, and obamacare which forces employer funded abortion, among, many, many other things that he has done. Why are you such a strong supporter even though he goes against many of the things that are beyond a modicum of decency? Because the only alternative is a rich white male? Why don't you support neither and call them for what they are? Because you are racist, and you are proud of it and unapologetic for it. So don't go around telling me that you have a moral reason for your economic cause!!!

bob jones - I feel so sorry for you. You are a typical right-winger that thinks everyone is out of step except you. You can "believe" what you want and call names all you want, but it doesn't mean you are right. You really need to read up on what President Obama and the ones that voted for him actually believe, instead of spewing stuff you saw on FauxNews. Who knows, you might learn something. Just because you continue to spew the lies doesn't mean anyone with a brain believes you.

This is what occupy Wall Street is all about. Because of Obama Care. Papa Johns is going to go from a 1.4 billion dollars annual revenue to 1.2 billion in annual revenue. So we must now panic and cut hours and raise our prices because, God forbid we drop to 1.2 billion. You know how much that affects my bonus. SMH

Funny, how folks don't boycott airlines or the local garbage/rubbish company for raising cost or added fees. I also noticed that some folks bash Fox News but can't explain why they call it "faux or fake" news. Just because your president said it doesn't make FOX News anymore fake or faux then NBC, ABC or CNN.
Watch CNN or FOX because the reporting is newsworthy not because someone else like your neighbor, president or kids don't like it.

I haven't heard "our" President say anything about not watching FauxNews. I don't watch it because I use to watch it and they kept feeding lies instead of news. It would not matter what President Obama did or did not do,they would dream up some kind of conspiracy plan or just flat out lie about it. If you watch FauxNews & then watch any other news you will see what I'm talking about; but, more than likely, if you are a right-winger or tea potter, you will still side with FauxNews. smile
