You know, I grew up in Illinois, went to school in the middle of vast, flat cornfields, and I've NEVER seen a tornado. I've been locked inside a grocery store because there was one outside, but I didn't get to see it. I've never seen flying monkeys either ...

Since everyone has weather on the brain, it's a good time to plug the Open House being hosted at the NWS forecast office in Sterling, VA this weekend. It's a great venue to learn exactly how forecasts and warnings are made for this area, as well as become an officially trained weather spotter for the NWS. For more information check out the following link: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/lwx/openhouse/

I'm going to try to go Brandie. Depends on how things go with the baby that day (she's cutting teeth and has been having a rough go at napping). If I do go, it will probably be late morning to early afternoon on Saturday. You'd totally love it though.

Thanks for the reminder. I was planning on attending but forgot to write it down. It will be a cool weekend for sure. By any chance, do you know if they allow cameras?

As far as I know, based on previous NWS open houses I have worked at or been to, cameras are welcome at this event. There will be some cool photo ops with a balloon release, a walk through the floor where they issue forecasts and warnings and I see Bob Ryan from ABC7 in DC will be there for part of it as well, so I'm sure you'll want to bring a camera along.
