Ulman: 'Two Little Two Late'
Ken Ulman has had it up to here ... with the Redskins. And he's putting his faith to the test.
Howard County Executive Ken Ulman is fed up and he wants Prince Georges County Executive Rushern Baker to know.
“I’m sick of hearing about the Redskins’ new quarterback,” Ulman said in a statement. “RG III will be TWO little and TWO late to handle the stifling Ravens defense," he said, referring to Redskins' quarterback Robert Lee Griffin III.
Ulman and Rushern are supposed to attend this weekend's match between the Washington Redskins and the Baltimore Ravens at the Redskins' stadium.
Ulman issued a challenge to Baker in advance of the game: if the Redskins win, he'll light up the Howard County government buildings in the Redskins' colors, burgundy and gold.
And he'll wear an RG3 jersey to work
But if the Ravens win? Then Ulman wants Baker to wear Ulman’s personal favorite jersey – number 92, Haloti Ngata.
And declare “Purple Friday” in Prince George's County.
Ulman has not heard back from Baker, according to the statement, but he doesn't sound worried.
"While the Ravens are set to lock up their division," he wrote, "The only way the Redskins will make it to the playoffs is on Play Station 3.”

Howard County exec seems to think everyone in his county is Baltimore centric. In my neighborhood there are more Post subscribers than Sun subscribers. If you walk around the neighborhood, you'll see many Nationals and Redskins flags, car stickers, etc. I'm tired of the assumption by Ulman and others that we who live between Baltimore and DC would be Baltimore oriented.

I think he's being playful with what could be a developing rivalry, given the Skins resurgence. But yes, there are many Skins fans in the area, as well as Ravens fans.

What a jerk. I will never vote for him now for any political position.
I suspect that he just lost any votes from PG county for statewide office also. Good luck running for governor.

I may have overreacted here. I got caught up in emotion. I would like to reduce my emphasis by 20%. I'll leave the old comment for perspective. Here is my new one:
"This is frustrating. I am not a Ravens fan, but I do live here. I don't really want the county offices lit up in Ravens colors or our county executive publicly making bets with PG county executives about the Ravens. If I was a Buffalo Bills fan, I probably would have less heartburn about it than I do as a Redskins fan. I'm not sure why Howard county should be betting PG county anyway. Shouldn't it be the mayor of Baltimore where the Ravens play, or...something?
I do honestly think this could affect Mr. Ulman's chances in the primary against someone who has PG county ties."
I stand by my later comments about leadership and unity.

This article doesn't capture the humor in the video that Ulman posted. As a Redskin fan that lives in Columbia, I found it humorous and was not offended at all. Ulman has always said that he would light up the county buildings burgundy if the Redskins were in the playoffs. Lighten up and enjoy watching Ulman wearing a RGIII jersey next week. :)

He has said that he would light up the buildings burgundy if the Redskins were in the playoffs? That's surprising, I've never heard that reported anywhere.
(It would be sweet to see him eat crow...)

Matt - you won't vote for him for political office because he is creating some silly rivalry around football?? wow - that's well thought out.

No, I won't vote for him because he is constantly pushing his Ravens fandom from his political office. This is not the first time. Lighting up county buildings purple when the Ravens are in the playoffs. It's divisive and not what I want in a leader.
This is the type of person who either only sees it one way ("EVERYONE in Howard County is a Ravens fan") OR just doesn't care about other opinions. Both of these options are particularly unattractive to me.
So yeah, I've given it a lot of thought over the past years that he's been in office and this is the last straw for me.

Or maybe, Matt,he paints the town purple during the playoffs because they actually get there. Of all the things to get political about, please leave football out of it.

I'm certainly not being political about football specifically. As I stated in response to "freckles", this is a leadership problem, not a football problem.

Ken has time to watch every single football game but clearly doesn't have time for the gym.

LOL..WELL SAID H.R. But he found an alternative to GYM...he just took all the sodas and juices out of all county buildings.
Ken knows best. SMH GOD help us if he runs and wins Govenor of this state.

I am not a football fan, but am a taxpayer. Am appalled that Ulman has the gall to use taxpayer dollars to add to the government waste, on colored lights over a childish rivalry. This is typical of High School behavior. He is so wasteful – typical Politician willing to use your dollars for his ego. After reading the story, the only thing I can say is “way too much testosterone” spending our money. Grow up!!! Ulman needs to concentrate on Howard County Government, cut budgets, cut taxes, stop spending, and stop kissing up to developers and using our tax dollars for new access roads to developers businesses and land development – force developers to pay for the new roads leading to their project. Ulman should return to High School and climb the Flag Pole over team rivalry; not use our tax dollars for his own EGO. I am ASHAMED he is representing this county; he needs to GO!!!!! – This is a miniature representation of our Federal Government – WASTE, WASTE – SPENDING OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY.

Really couldn't care less about instigating a rivalry, except that it's the tax payers who will pay and don't we have grater concerns to focus on? Also, doesn't anyone else care about spelling and grammar anymore? Should be TOO not two.

It is obvious Ulman video taped this challenge during work hours on our dime, in the office we provided with our tax dollars. Ulman's behavior is disgusting on the video, looks like a child saying "Red Rover Red Rover I Dare You Come Over". We should vote for an adult to be the County Executive. This video should be passed around to show the lack of concern for the people who pays his salary, pays for his office, and pays for the electricity so he can work in his office. This video spews his willingness to use our hard earned tax dollars for his own entertainment. DISGUSTING!!!

Remmy, I hope you were at work earning your tax dollars while you were reading the Patch. But really, though, you come across a wee bit nutty, along with the other--I'm guessing Republicans--who are trying to make a mountain out of nothing at all. Save your umbrage for something that matters. Ken Ulman has been a GREAT County Executive by any objective measure.

I have had it up to here.......with Ken Ulman. Do your job and stop grandstanding. We arent going to vote for you as governor no matter how much you try to be the "Guy Nextdoor". We need a professional that will get Howard County back on track. And agreed. Stop wasting our money. You can start with getting rid of the administrative goofs that are letting all the violent criminals out on low bail. After that start rolling back all this over development. I remember a young guy who promised not to destroy Columbia and subsequently HoCo by constant expansion. where is he?
