Thousands turn out for annual Main Street Festival.
Vendors lined the streets with activities, foods and crafts while residents hopped from one booth to another at the Laurel Main Street Festival Saturday. The event, organized by the Laurel Board of Trade, is in its 31st year. Meant to showcase local businesses, the festival continues to draw huge crowds every year. "There's a lot of variety and a lot of hometown," said Laurel Board of Trade President Michelle DeLorenzo Arsenault. "That's probably one of the biggest things we wanted to do." Eight-year-old Mackenzie Somerville, from North Laurel, has been attending the festival since birth. "You can eat, you can play games,” she said while painting a ceramic turtle at the festival. “You can ride ponies and it's really fun." Organizers made …

The Columbia native was not asked to reprise his 2008 Hulk role in 2012's smash hit The Avengers.
The Avengers is estimated to be the biggest opening weekend in movie history, pulling in a whopping $205 million, according to Marvel/Walt Disney Studios, the makers of the film. The film stars superheroes who themselves have been the subjects of recent movies. There is Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man in 2008 and the sequel in 2010. Chris Hemsworth, who took up the hammer in 2011, plays Thor. Chris Evans, who played Captain America in the 2011 film, was also invited back for The Avengers. However, not reprising his 2008 role as The Incredible Hulk is Edward Norton, the grandson of Columbia’s founder James Rouse and a native of Columbia. The role of Bruce Banner/ The Hulk is played by Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers. Should Norton have …

Have you seen this leather-capped air artist?
For more than two decades, Barry Gibson has showered the spring and summer days on Main Street in Ellicott City with thousands of fleeting masterpieces. Gibson has been known by folks in Ellicott City as "the bubble guy" ever since he began showing off his bubble blowing talents in front of the Forget Me Not Factory, the magic-themed shop where he works. "It's very soothing. You don't think about anything when you do bubbles," Gibson told Patch. In addition to attracting patrons to the fantastical gift shop, Gibson occasionally uses his hobby to help entertain autistic children with what he calls "bubble therapy." He says watching the bubbles is soothing for people, much like watching the ocean or night sky. "I just tell them, 'Play with …

Laurel's Venus Theatre Play Shack has been putting on productions that tell the story of women.
Slightly hidden off Main Street in Laurel, the Venus Theatre Play Shack puts on productions that aim to tell the story of women in an empowering way. “Our mission is to send flight to the voice of women,” Deborah Randall, founder, said. Opening its doors in Laurel along C Street in 2007, the Venus Theatre avoids productions that put female characters in stereotypical roles like housewives, rape victims and prostitutes. Instead productions, like “A Girl Named Destiny,” opening Thursday, are meant to have an uplifting effect. With four shows a year, the small stage seats about 30 audience members, who sit on two opposing sides of the stage. Giving the actors a close, intimate relationship with the audience, the black box theatre is perfect…

The word Kwanzaa is derived from a Swahili phrase that means “first fruits.” The holiday is replete with symbolism drawn from various African cultures, and those symbols—like corn, which represents hope and birth—were on display in Howard County on Wednesday, Dec. 28. At the Howard County Library's Central Branch in Columbia, about a dozen children gathered for an interactive program on Kwanzaa, which included an explanation of what the holiday is about. The distinctly American holiday, celebrated each year from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, began in 1966 as a means of forging a sense of community among African-Americans. Kwanzaa takes place over seven days, and each night, families discuss one of the seven principles that define their community: …
