The Work Flow

The matter of minimum wage has influenced a national discussion over the past 20 years about the employment effects of minimum and sub minimum wages. Studies conducted by the works and research of David Card, Lawrence Katz and Alan Krueger in 1993, House Republican members of the Joint Economic Committee in 1994, as well conservative and liberal journalists and politicians of the 21st Century has  initiated a controversy that  minimum wage salaries may or may not increase unemployment.

Whilst employment vs. unemployment is a matter of ethics, defending and recommending concepts for the best ways that people should live in an industrial economy have become a national responsibility driven by disputes of moral diversity. The only winner in the matter is the one whose business produces the most work, regardless of employment and unemployment. People are going to live according to their standards which are character driven. The existence of an organization however, will or will not survive based on the mathematical equation of work and the flow of its associates.

When a force moves a certain mass through a specific distance, work is done. When work is accomplished, the mass may be lifted or slid on a surface against a resistance or opposing force. Work is equal to the applied force multiplied by the distance the object moved (force x distance = work) and is measured in foot-pounds, watts, or newton-meters. For example if a force moves a 3,000 pound car 50 feet, 150,000 foot pounds of work was done.

During work, a force acts on an object to start, stop, or change the direction of the object. It is possible to apply a force to an object and not move the object. For example, you may push with all your strength on a car stuck in a ditch and not move the car. Under this condition, no work is done. Work is only accomplished when an object is started, stopped, or redirected by force.

According to Wikipedia, all industries fall under one of five different sectors:

* Primary: This involves the extraction of resources directly from the Earth; this includes farming, mining and logging. They do not process the products at all. They send it off to factories to make a profit. Because of 20th Century advancements writers for example can measure their work using computers that use software systems for word processing that accounts for the words being typed to create stories, programs, and articles.

* Secondary: This group is involved in the processing products from primary industries. This includes all factories—those that refine metals, produce furniture, or pack farm products such as meat.

* Tertiary: This group is involved in the provision of services. They include teachers, managers and other service providers.

* Quaternary: This group is involved in the research of science and technology and other high level tasks. They include scientists, doctors, and lawyers.

* Quinary: Some consider there to be a branch of the quaternary sector called the quinary sector, which includes the highest levels of decision making in a society or economy. This sector would include the top executives or officials in such fields as government, science, universities, nonprofit, healthcare, culture, and the media.

Every industry has a driving force that measures the work which is accomplished. All industries use different tools to process the distance of movement their respective organizations should be making. Because of 20th Century advancements writers for example can measure their work by using computers and software systems for word processing which has the capabilities to account for the words being typed by minutes (or hours) to create stories, programs, and articles.  Automobile shops on the other hand measure the cost of their services according to the time it will take to accomplish certain tasks to repair vehicles. The usage of the tools used by auto mechanics determine the time it will take to accomplish their tasks. Additional tools are also placed on vehicles which will determine the distance of time the vehicles will operate. Most technicians operate like auto mechanics with respect to their usage of tools and objects and unlike writers or other professionals who only rely on computers to output a product or service the process of movement is weighed comprehensively and extreme factors are taken into consideration to assure the safety and security of personnel.

All jobs are not the same and many employers loose on productivity because they fail to take into consideration the concept of work which in all facets is a mathematical formula. Thus the rise and the fall of market is said to be determined by supply and demand, when in all actuality the determining factor is work which equates to the force multiplied by the distance of time it will take an organization to sink or swim towards achievement. When an organization has a high turnover rate with its employee this can be harmful to a company's productivity. If skilled workers are often leaving and the worker population of an organization contains a high percentage of novice workers, force times distance will not be accomplished at a competitive rate and can cause the organization with less movement to generate less profit.

People who know more often feel a sense of passion connected to their work and can do more at a more advanced rate. A combination of people who know more is the force that motivates a team to do more which encourages the endurance of an organization. Computers and technological tools cost as much on average as it does to keep personnel. Although organizations do not hold computers and technological tools responsible for ethical behavior they also have a high turnover rate due to constant changes because of low quality equipment and because of today’s constantly emerging technologies. Just as personnel may have weaknesses, technology also has its weaknesses and although both are needed to maintain the constant flow of work it seems as though employers place a higher value on maintaining tools and technology than it could on personnel. A recent conversation about the iPhone vs. the Android phone for example pointed out the fact that most organizations would rather invest in the iPhone, a more expensive communication device for upper level personnel, while investing in minimum or subminimum wage salaries for lower level personnel. The fact that upper level management carries a lot of responsibility does not compensate for the fact that organizations unnecessarily spend big on itemizations that could easily be budgeted to improve the hourly wage for individuals who may be working minimum or subminimum wage. Some people really deserve a raise; they work four to eight hours a day on minimum wage and supply the maximum force an organization needs to boost profits.

When job hunting and comparing salaries, think about all the energy it will take for you to make a progressive contribution to your workplace. Everyone is not perfect, but our experiences change our perceptions and help us grow. Self-development is important in our ever changing environments. The work formula is also just as important for any career in every industry. Knowledge of this fact can change the business state of flow. Furthermore, it is good practice to adopt different states of mind and share it with your team to bring flow to your organization. Take initiative, it doesn’t matter who starts a new project as long as it’s designed to create a productive work flow. Here are some examples:

* See what people on your team and in your community are happy about and create a daily gratitude log and/or a community resource board.

* Celebrate all the successes of the previous week and formulate an awesomeness report.

* Finally, employers should consider creating a system where they share profits with their employees.  Every month contribute 10% of profits to a team effort.

Start a daily group huddle prior to each shift and discuss the gratitude log, the community board, the awesomeness report and how the team will celebrate next month.  These small changes can help to drive the happiness of an organization. No matter how far the distance, everyone’s experiences are going to be different, but it’s always great to have a smooth sunny ride than to be treading on a stormy rocky road.
