Camp for Girls Information Session Set for March 8

The Women’s Giving Circle is hosting an information session about Journey, the residential summer camp for girls who will be in 8th and 9th grade next Fall. The session will be held Saturday, March 8, from 10:30 a.m.  to noon,  in the Sportswear Department on the lower level of Lord & Taylor in The Mall in Columbia.  Girls and their parents are invited to attend.  Lord & Taylor is offering 15% discount cards to all attendees.

Journey will run from Sunday, July 13 – Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Washington College in Chestertown, MD.   The girls will live in the college dorms, eat in the college cafeteria, and experience a collegiate atmosphere during the week-long program.

Maryland Leadership Workshops, Inc. (MLW) will operate Journey, as it has since its inception. MLW has been providing leadership training programs for middle and high school students in the state of Maryland for over 55 years. Journey’s Program Director is Emily Peterson. Hammond High School Principal Marcy Leonard serves as Outreach Program Facilitator and Policy Board Member of MLW.

Journey program components will include:

·        Workshops on empowerment and motivation, communication, decision making skills, group dynamics, self-awareness, goal setting, and conflict resolution

·        Small and large group projects for girls to apply and get feedback on their leadership and interpersonal skills

·        One-on-one interactions between staff and girls to address specific areas of growth for the individual and identify an action plan for post-site implementation

·        Recreational activities such as swimming and athletics and team building games and activities, including a Confidence Course

 

Applicants should have some previous experience in leading her peers, a willingness to try new experiences in a safe environment, and a desire to serve her community.

 

The Women’s Giving Circle is an organization of women philanthropists dedicated to addressing the needs of women and girls in Howard County.  Its funding offsets some of the costs of the camp program.  The cost to attendees is $700.
