IND Senior Accepted to Many of Nation’s Most Highly Competitive Colleges

For many high school seniors it’s that time of year to make an important decision as to which college to attend, but for Jessup resident, Maya Arthur, that choice was twelve times harder. Maya’s a senior at the Institute of Notre Dame (IND) who’s been accepted to over a dozen of the nation’s most competitive schools.

Many are impressed by Maya’s mature demeanor. The professionals in IND’s Guidance Department will tell you that this soft spoken 17-year-old is an intellectual powerhouse. Among her acceptances are the most prestigious and sought-after admissions in the country: Barnard College, Boston University, Drexel University, Fordham University, Ithaca College, Northeastern University, Sarah Lawrence College, St. Joseph’s University, Smith College, University of Pennsylvania, UMBC, University of Rochester and Vassar College—with an astounding amount of scholarships!

Maya attended Bethel Christian Academy in Jessup and for the past four years has been a diligent student at IND in Baltimore. She was named a Theresian Scholar after enduring four years of a rigorous high school curriculum. 

A natural leader, Maya is the president of It’s Academic, secretary of the Shalom Club, co-founder of the Discussion Club and treasurer of the National Honor Society. She’s also a part of the Environmental Club, and Japanese Culture Club at IND. Maya volunteers at the Elijah Cummings Youth Program, the Baltimore Jewish Council and surrounding synagogues, and as a mentor at KIPP Ujima and Catholic Relief Services. She spent last summer in Israel as part of the Elijah Cummings Youth Program and participated in the Page Program at the Maryland General Assembly.

Maya says she’s “pretty grateful about all the acceptances and glad that the decision process is over. The hardest part was choosing.” Come fall, Maya will be a Quaker at the University of Pennsylvania. Her parents Myron and Ada Arthur must be really proud. After college Maya plans to work as a journalist or attend graduate school. She has her eyes set on another Ivy League school, Columbia University.
