Journey Delegates Recognize Role Models at Tea Sunday

As they have in past years, delegates who attended Journey, the summer camp for middle school girls founded by the Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County, will host a tea on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 2-3:30 p.m., to honor four local women role models.

This year’s honorees include Gail Bates, Elizabeth Bobo, Carroll Kitzmiller and Pam Mack.  All four women are members of the Howard County Women’s Hall of Fame.

Bates has been a member of the Maryland House of Delegates since 2002.  Previously she served as Executive Assistant to County Executive Charles I. Ecker and has held leadership positions in a wide variety of county organizations.  She is a 1990 graduate of Leadership Howard County.

Bobo has been a member of the Maryland House of Delegates since 1994 and is currently chair of the Howard County delegation.  She was the first women in the state to be elected County Executive and served from 1998-1990.  She was a member of the Howard County Council from 1977-1986.

Kitzmiller is noted for her volunteerism and leadership on behalf of people in need, serving as director of FISH, an organization that helps families cope with emergency situations by providing transportation, food and medicine and responding to other requests.

Mack was the first woman elected chair of the Columbia Council in 1979 and led it for six years.  She served as vice president and director of community relations for the Columbia Association from 1986-2000 and as Executive Director and CEO of the Health Alliance, which provided free health care to uninsured residents, from 2001-2006.

The honorees were selected by Journey delegates as part of an intensive camp experience that included workshops on self-awareness and decision making and other topics. Journey is operated by Maryland Leadership Workshops, which has been providing leadership training programs for middle and high school students in the state of Maryland for over 50 years.

Over 240 delegates have completed the camp since its start in 2006. The signature program was founded and is financially supported by contributions from donors to WGC.

The tea will be held in the Kittleman Room of the Duncan Hall Building at Howard Community College.  No reservations are required.

The Women’s Giving Circle is a community of women philanthropists addressing the needs of women and girls in Howard County. Among its activities, WGC has established a scholarship fund at Howard Community College for women who are seeking training to improve their employment options. WGC provides emergency funding to local nonprofit groups serving women in need, among other grants.

WGC was founded in 2002 and has over 1,100 donors, who have contributed and pledged over $1.1 million to its donor advised fund with the Community Foundation of Howard County.  For information, visit www.womensgivingcircle.org.
