UPDATE: Power Is Restored In Laurel

A blown out transformer in the city causes a massive power outage.

UPDATE 8:30 P.M.

Power has been restored to most of Laurel after a malfunction in a transformer in the city left 4,800 customers without power during the late afternoon.

A blown out power transformer near Route 198 has left at least 4,800 customers in Laurel without power, according to Baltimore Gas and Electric.

The outage began shortly before 5 p.m., officials from BGE said power should be restored by 7 p.m. but could be as long as 10 p.m. before all power is restored.

WTOP is reporting that the transformer malfunctioned due to high stress on the system--power is slowly being restored.

The Laurel Police Department is running on generator power, officials there said the city was facing a "massive power outage."

The loss of power comes as the city is under a through 8 p.m. Today, Mayor Craig A. Moe , but it remains unclear if the pools will remain open without power.
