Encampments, Car Shows, Bike Rides and More in Prince George’s County this Weekend

Looking for some exciting things to do this weekend? Check out some of the fun things going on around town.

When:  Saturday, August 11, 2012, 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m.

Why to go:  Check out cavalry & horseback demos. Take a peek into camp life with demos, drills, and kitchen/camp displays. Kids can enjoy story time, arts/crafts, and try on period dresses and uniforms. Girl and Boy Scouts, earn a badge.

This FREE family-friendly event features American and British War of 1812 troops, including Ship’s Company, Baltimore United Volunteers, and Aisquith’s Sharp Shooters. Kids may even get recruited for the American militia!

Why to go:  Come see classic cars and live entertainment along the Potomac River.

When: Sunday, August 12, 2012, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Why to go:  Come celebrate the anniversary of the first Airmail flight out of the College Park Airport by creating your own stamp and airmail bag.

Why to go:  The 18-date "Brothers of the Sun" tour combines Chesney and McGraw for a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience.

Where:9217 Baltimore Ave, College Park, MD

When: Saturday, August 11, 2012, 11:00 a.m.

Why to go:  This is a family-friendly ride on the Anacostia tributary trails. We'll head out from the Proteus bike shop at 11 am and take the Northeast Branch trail to the Bladensburg marina. As we head back, we'll stop for festivities and food at Riversdale mansion for the War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration of the Battle of Bladensburg Encampment. Bring a bike lock so you can explore on foot and cash for "historically inspired refreshments."

When: Friday, August 10, 2012, 7:00 p.m.

Why to go:  Stage kisses, pinkeye, inciting World War III -- these are only a few of the many things that can go wrong during the production of a play. From the author of 15 Reasons Not To Be in a Play, Alan Haehnel, comes a full evening of the horrors and hardships that befall those who feel the call of the stage.  

This year, we are proud to showcase a diverse cast from numerous schools in the DC Metro area.

Handicap parking is available in the Charis Center lot. General parking can be found along the streets, but please do not park in the fire station lot.

When: Saturday, August 11, 2012, 8:00 a.m.

Why to go:  The Prince George's Running Club meets at 8 a.m. on Saturdays in Greenbelt National Park. The meeting point is Sweetgum picnic area. Take a right at the stop sign at the top of the rise after you enter.

The club runs in all weather.

When: Fridays, June 22 – Sept 28, Films begin at dusk (approximately 8:30 p.m.)

Why to go:  Nothing says summer like an evening under the stars—and there’s no better way to enjoy the season than Movies on the Potomac at National Harbor. The 2012 season runs from Friday, May 25 through Sunday, September 28.

Whether it’s Date Night Friday or Family Sunday, pack your picnic and chairs, and meet us at the Plaza’s big screen for a FREE evening of ocean breezes and all-ages fun!

Bring your lawn chairs, but coolers filled with alcohol or food will not be allowed.

When: Sundays, June 17-Sept 2, Films begin at dusk (approximately 8:30 p.m.)
