“The Health Department is committed to ensuring that every resident of Prince George’s County knows their HIV status,” said Health Officer Donald Shell, in a statement “The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that a quarter of a million Americans are unaware that they are infected with HIV. The knowledge gained from testing can save lives and must be taken seriously.”

The National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) designated June 27 as  National HIV Testing Day since 1995 with communities all across the nation. The purpose of the day is to promote early diagnosis and HIV-testing. It is believed that with early diagnosis, uncertain individuals will know their HIV-status and then receive appropriate treatment and care as well as preventing the spread of HIV.
