Navy Blimp Flies in DC Skies

The U.S. Navy heads into the air above the Washington, DC, region.

Have you noticed a blimp flying in the sky above the Washington, DC, region?

It's a U.S. Navy blimp, and it's doing a little mapping of the area, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory reported in a news release.

The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and the U.S. Navy's Scientific Development Squadron are using the blimp for aerial mapping at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville and at U.S. Army Fort Belvoir in Fairfax. The blimp also will do some mapping elsewhere in the area, and occasionally will fly across the region to as far north as the Frederick Municipal Airport in Maryland and to as far south as Culpepper, VA, the release stated.

Mapping started on Sept. 21, and will finish up by Oct. 5.

Flight information is broadcast on approved Air Traffic Control radio frequencies, the release added.
