Rides, Runs, Exhibits and More in Prince George's County this Weekend

Looking for some exciting things to do this weekend? Check out some of the fun things going on around town.

Why to go:   Learn about wildlife conservation and recreational opportunities through habitat exploration, children’s crafts, archery and firearm demonstrations.

When: Saturday, August 25, 2012, 1:00 p.m.

Why to go:  Learn how to build and decorating your own kite. The $8 workshop fee covers museum admission and the price of one kite kit.

Where:  Cultural Arts Center, Montgomery College, 7995 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD

When:  Friday, August 24, 2012, 6:30 p.m.

Why to go:   This event will honor veterans, teachers and many others returning to regular routines after summer. The event includes speakers, meditation, dancers, singers, comedy and more.

Where:  4101 Crain Hwy, Bowie, MD

When:  Friday, August 24, 2012, 7:05 p.m.

Why to go:  Cheer on the Bowie Baysox as they battle the Harrisburg Senators.  This evening will also include and all-new Fireworks & Flames show to celebrate the various battles that took place in Maryland during the War of 1812.

Where:  9217 Baltimore Ave, College Park, MD

When:  Saturday, August 25, 2012, 8:00 a.m.

Why to go:  Join up with other riders for one of two different fun and scenic rides:

8:00 a.m. – Food ride: Easy ride on paved trails (NE Branch) with stops at pastry shop or farmers market.  These rides will take a very relaxed pace and no one is left behind.

10:00 a.m.  –Beltsville Farms ride: Ride will take place on a  22 mile loop from the shop to the Patuxent National Wildlife Refuge.  This is a very scenic ride done at a moderate pace.  No one will be dropped or left behind, although sometimes we split up into groups of faster or slower riders.

Why to go:  TOTEM traces the fascinating journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly. The characters evolve on a stage evoking a giant turtle, the symbol of origin for many ancient civilizations.

Pricing:  $40-150.00 (Depending on seating)

Where: 3501 University Blvd E, Adelphi, MD

When: Friday, August 24, Saturday, August 25, 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Why to go:  University of Maryland University College (UMUC) will host a new exhibit, Joseph Sheppard: A Voyage from Memory, 1930-1960.  This exhibition focuses on Sheppard’s artistic journey and his creation of images based on his memory of significant American events.

Where:  6565 Greenbelt Rd, Greenbelt, MD

When:  Saturday, August 25, 2012, 8:00 a.m.

Why to go:  Join up with other runners and check out new and scenic trails.  The Prince George's Running Club meets at 8 a.m. on Saturdays in Greenbelt National Park. The meeting point is Sweetgum picnic area. Take a right at the stop sign at the top of the rise after you enter.
