City of Laurel Maneuvers to Avoid Fine

Hoping to avoid a hefty state fine, the city of Laurel is weighing an option to inspect its own summer camp program.

According to the Laurel Leader, the city is hoping to avoid a an 833 percent fee increase -- from $75 to nearly $700 -- for a state inspection and certification.

The increase is expected to pay for inspectors, who critique the camp programs. State budget cuts lefts the program with about one third of the inspectors it needs. City officials said the extra fees were not budgeted for.

Employees Honored at Annual Municipal Awards

The city kicked off its 16th Annual City of Laurel Employees Awards earlier this month.

According to The Gazette, Budget and Personnel Services director Michele Saylor received the Mayor's Award, the highest recognition, for her work on the fiscal 2012 budget.

Parks and recreation director Michael Lhotsky received the Kristie Mills Leadership Award for overseeing work on the police department's new recreation space and for his leadership in acquiring and renovating the city's new storage facility.

Asian Tiger Mosquito Descends on Laurel

A part of a list of pest expected to swoop through the region this summer, the asian tiger mosquito is expected to be a returning pest to Laurel---just as officials try to figure out what to do about it.

According to the Laurel Leader, city and state officials are not sure how large Laurel's mosquito population will be this year, but because the larvae cannot survive without wet nesting spots, they said the number will depend mainly on the amount of rain in the area between now and September.
