The Monday Roundup: Laurel's Next Top Model Edition

It was another busy weekend in Laurel: St. Mark's United Methodist held it's first annual Fashion Show, and the Laurel Museum celebrated its birthday.

The St. Marks United Methodist Church hosted their first annual “Couture”-The Tyrone Devone Mundell Scholarship and Fashion Show on Sunday, at the Holiday Inn in West Laurel benefiting the young people of the congregation with the establishment of a scholarship in  Mundell’s name.

Mundell was a lifelong member of the church who died on December 29, 2010, at the age of 32, from kidney disease. Mundell's main love was for fashion and motorcycles. Many members of the church remember  Mundell as a man committed to family and friends.

The scholarship fund will benefit a deserving youth who is committed to become a confident and competent leader who lives by the virtues of modesty and purity in the community and as well as in school.

The Laurel Museum brought many visitors including past and present politicians, and residents of Laurel to help celebrate the event. Many in attendance recall the time before the museum moved into the building the condition it was in.

“Before the museum moved into the building, the building was being held up only by God”, a long time Laurel was quoted as saying.  The museum opened a new exhibit highlighting the Laurel Racetrack and Laurel residents who worked at the track.

Auto thefts persist in Laurel

While the number of auto thefts in the region have dropped in recent years, it still presents a serious problem in Laurel and Prince George's County, according to a report in the Laurel Leader.

Laurel Police are still working to combat a high number of thefts over the last year. While thefts in Prince George's county plummeted from 19,000 in 205 to 6,700 in 2010, the latest data available for Laurel shows an uptick in thefts: 215 vehicles stolen in 2008 and 219 in 2009.

"Auto thefts have decreased in the city," Laurel Police Chief Richard McLaughlin told the Leader. "We had a couple of car jackings last year, but they [thieves] were caught."
