Ground Breaking Ceremony Planned for Laurel Mall Redevelopment

Major retailers being tapped as potential tenants.

Plans to redevelop Laurel Mall have gained momentum with developers behind the project announcing a ground-breaking ceremony for next week.

Greenberg Gibbons Commercial, which partnered with the site's owner, Somera Capital Management, to redevelop the mall, will hold an invitation-only groundbreaking ceremony Aug. 14.

Plans for the mall’s the demolition of the mall’s parking lot during the holiday season. By May 1 the mall had officially closed, leaving only the U.S. Post Office and Burlington Coat Factor open.

Greenberg announced the mall was pursuing retailers Harris Teeter, Regal Cinemas, and Burlington Coat Factory to anchor what would be called the Town Centre at Laurel.

Before the project could move forward, a deal had to be reached with Burlington, which currently has a store open at the site that would allow for the redevelopment, according to the Laurel Leader.

This seems way larger than the space that is available, are they planning to expand to the shopping center next door (Giant)?

I doubt it will be expanded to Giant, as that center is owned by another developer. It will be interesting to see what's in the finished project.

It will be more interesting to see IF the project is finished. Unless there is construction equipment lined up and ready to begin work immediately after the ground breaking ceremony, I don't hold much hope that any actual "ground breaking" will happen any time soon.
