Laurel Mall Post Office To Close?

The Laurel Mall location is one of 3,700 U.S. Post offices that may close.

Is it lights out for the Laurel Mall U.S. Postal Service?

According to a list posted on the USPS website, the Laurel Mall location has been selected for possible closure as soon as September.

Suffering from a $2.6 billion loss during the first quarter of the year, the USPS is looking to cut cost and shed 3,700 locations—12 percent of its postal offices. The closings are expected to save about $200 million annually, according to Bloomberg.

Most of the locations are in rural communities. In communities without a post office, the USPS plans to sell stamps and offer services through local retailers.

The Laurel Mall location has suffered in recent years from slowing foot traffic at the mall. Earlier this year, the mall accelerated, but new developers said the mall would likely be torn down and most tenants would not be returning. It remains unclear how that affected the post office's placement on the list.
