UPDATE: Scott's Cove Drowning Victim Identified

A bystander called 911 after hearing the 15-year-old boy cry for help.

Officials say the body of a 15-year-old boy was recovered from the water at Scott's Cove on Monday hours after bystanders heard him cry for help.

The drowning victim was identified as Victor Manuel Videla-Hernandez of the 1000 block of Harrison Drive in Laurel.

Emergency responders were called to the 11000 block of Henderson Road in North Laurel around 4 p.m. to perform a water rescue, according to the Howard County Department of Fire & Rescue Services.

Montgomery County police said Videla-Hernandez had been with family at the park when he went looking for other family members who were fishing nearby.

A bystander called 911 after seeing the boy go under the water around 3:45 p.m. and not resurface, according to police.

Swimmers from the HCDFRS conducted a "hasty search" of the area when they first arrived at the scene but were unable to locate Videla-Hernandez.

Boats, dogs, and air support were quickly called in to lead a more extensive search, fire officials said. About 40 people assisted in the effort.

Videla-Hernandez's body was eventually located and pulled from the water around 7 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

There are no lifeguards on duty at Scott's Cove—part of the Rocky Gorge Reservoir—where swimming is prohibited.

Officials said that the water temperature late Monday afternoon was about 50°.

Montgomery County homicide detectives are leading the investigation into the boy's death, as the reservoir runs between Howard and Montgomery counties.
