Heat-Related Delays Expected on Camden Line Wednesday

Passengers should expect delays of five to 15 minutes.

By Jenni Pompi

CSX has issued heat-related speed restrictions on the Camden and other lines Wednesday due to expected consistent temperatures of above 85 degrees for the day, reports the Maryland Transit Authority.

Heat orders mandate speed restrictions that could result in train delays of five to 15 minutes. Trains that make fewer tops will have fewer stops will have more delays, as express trains travel longer distances at higher rates of speed, according to MTA.

The MTA website states that when CSX issues heat orders on the Camden Line, the maximum speed of passenger trains is reduced by 20 mph—but not under 40 mph—if:

  • Ambient temperatures of 85 degrees or greater are expected; or
  • A temperature shift of 25 degrees—either warmer or colder—in a 24-hour period

CSX inspectors will also be inspecting tracks as part of the heat order, which could lead to further delays.

Note: Heat orders are not issued on the Penn Line until ambient temperatures reach 95 or 100 degrees.
