Laurel Announces Boys and Girls Club Task Force

The task force's first meeting is set for tonight (Tuesday, April 23) at 8:30 p.m.

Mayor Craig A. Moe has announced that the formation of the Laurel Boys and Girls Club Task Force is complete. Members of the Task Force appointed by the Mayor and City Council are: Chair G. Rick Wilson, Vice-Chair Monique Holland, Gloria Arnold, Robert J. DiPietro, Mickey Fink, Lionel Francis, Craig Frederick, Marcellus Shepard, and Kenneth Taylor. Representing the Laurel Boys and Girls Club, appointed by Club President Levet Brown, are Adrian Rousseau and Michael Sarich. The meeting schedule is announced herein. City Staff Support includes the City Administrator, the Director of Budget and Personnel Services, and the Director of Parks and Recreation, per adopted Mayor and City Council Resolution No. 2-13, enacted on February 25, 2013.

Mayor Moe, Council President Smalls, and Club President Levet Brown have met over recent months and have agreed that it is in the City’s and the Club’s best interests to create a “Laurel Boys and Girls Club Financial and Operational Review Task Force” to take testimony, hold public hearings and make recommendations to the Mayor and City Council concerning all programs, funding and issues facing the Club.

Included in the areas to be reviewed by the Task Force are: History of the Club; City Support of the Club; Financial Review (Past and Present Accounts); Review Youth Programs (Club, City County); Review Other Programs of the Club; Fundraising Activities; County and State Support; Other Support, Grants, and In-kind Services; Current Location (to include facility tour). Information gained from these areas will allow the Task Force to develop both short and long term recommendations.

The Task Force will meet on Tuesday, April 23, 2013; Tuesday, April 30, 2013; Tuesday, May 7, 2013; Tuesday, May 28, 2013; Tuesday, June 4, 2013; and Tuesday, June 25, 2013. All meetings will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be held in the Council Chambers at the Laurel Municipal Center, 8103 Sandy Spring Road. All meetings will be broadcast on the City’s Cable channels, Comcast 71 and Verizon 12. Each meeting will conclude with a public hearing with an estimated start time of 8:30 p.m.

Mayor Moe encourages all who are interested in the Task Force discussions to either attend the meetings in person or watch them on one of the City’s Cable Television channels. Chairman Wilson encourages public participation in the Task Force meetings. Public participation is important to the process, will assist in providing a more widespread discussion, and contribute greatly to the development of quality, comprehensive recommendations in the Task Force Final Report.
