More Seasonal Spring Temperatures Expected This Weekend in Savage

The heat scorched the region Wednesday, but the weather is expected to be cooler over the weekend.

The freakish early spring heat this week does not appear to be expected to continue, with mild, spring-like temperatures expected now and throughout the weekend.

On Wednesday, record high temperatures blasted the region, with BWI Airport reaching at least 90 degrees, breaking its record of 89 in 1922, according to the Capital Weather Blog on the Washington Post.

Thursday is expected to reach a high near 76 in Howard County, the National Weather Service says, with showers likely at night.

The news of more seasonal spring temperatures may be a relief to some, especially local schools.

Hollifield Station Elementary School in Ellicott City sent a note to parents Wednesday afternoon urging them to dress children in layers as temperatures will vary in school buildings.

Principal Lisa Booth said the school had requested that air conditioning be turned on as soon as possible, but said the change wouldn’t be made until next week at the latest.

“Unfortunately, school buildings are unable to be switched from heat to air conditioning quickly,” she wrote in an email to parents. “The warm weather is unexpected, and the school system employs a limited number of HVAC employees so all buildings cannot be changed to air conditioning at the same time.”
