Federal Judge Wants Answers From Prince George's Council on West Laurel Church

A federal judge wants the Prince George's County Council to pony up answers on why it continues to oppose the construction of a church in West Laurel, according to reports.

Reaching Hearts International Inc., a Seventh-day Adventist congregation, plans to build a 72,000-square foot church on 17 acres at 6100 Brooklyn Bridge Road. The congregation has been battling the county council, and , since 2003 to move forward with the project.

U.S. District Judge Roger Titus threatened last month to hold the council in contempt for rejecting a recent application from the congregation. A federal jury had earlier ordered the county to pay damages to the church for religious discrimination. An appeals court three years ago upheld a $3.7 million verdict.

Titus has ordered the council to respond by August 4, and has set a hearing for September 1.

Horseback Riding to Continue at Laurel Area Reservoir

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission is working on a way to continue to allow horseback riding on trails near the T. Howard Duckett Reservoir.

According to The Gazette, the WSSC announced that it will hire a consultant to help assess conditions in the watershed, through which the utility supplies water to many of its 1.8 million customers.

No costs for the project have been determined yet, but the plan is to look at impacts in the entire watershed, not just the portion around the reservoir, which is controlled by the water and sewer utility that serves Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
