WATCH: Cherry Blossoms 'Snow' in Howard County

Cherry blossom petals are filling streets and ditches across Howard County.

The District isn't the only area around here that sees canopies of pink lining streets and sidewalks–Howard County has seen its fair share of cherry blossom blooms over the past week, too.

Cherry tree buds in the area opened prematurely, according to The Washington Post, which described the scene as "snowing" with petals.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival will continue through April 27, although experts doubt the blossoms will survive that long, reports the Post.

It was 100 years ago that Japan gave more than 3,000 cherry trees to the United States in an effort to forge a diplomatic friendship between the countries, according to the New American.

The Blossoms of Hope project adds to the local cherry tree population every year by planting trees throughout the Howard County Library System and other locations throughout Maryland. The project allows businesses to purchase and dedicate new cherry trees at the , and Elkridge libraries.

Check out the video above for a look at a particularly "snowy" neighborhood, along April Journey Way in Columbia.

Editor's Note: The 5th paragraph was edited to correct that the Blossoms of Hope project plants cherry trees, not the Howard County Library System.

My baby loved the "snow" earlier this week! It made him laugh and was so cute!

This video just makes me smile when I watch it. A rite of spring passage in these parts, for sure.

Just to clarify that while the Library System is a proud partner with Blossoms of Hope, BOH actually runs the cherry tree project. Learn more at http://www.visithowardcounty.com/blossoms-of-hope.

My daughter said " look mom it's snowing outside". I explained it was the trees.

Thank you for telling us. We've corrected it in the story.
