Howard News Roundup: Parents Break Silence, Diluted Milk Gets Booted From School

Family of student killed in crash speaks out, diluted milk removed from school, and Laurel Councilman tapped to head Patuxent Commission.

Laurel Council member Mike Leszcz has been tapped to serve as chair of the Patuxent River Commission. The PRC is a 34-member, inter-jurisdictional group that was created by legislative action of the Maryland General Assembly in 1980 to address Patuxent River watershed issues. 

 

The family of a Johns Hopkins student who was killed when an elderly driver crashed into him with her car is speaking up. The family is opposing legislation that would lengthen the time that drivers have to renew their drivers licenses.

'Diluted' Milk Removed from Glenwood Middle Cafeteria


After a student complained last week about a carton of milk tasting bad, milk was pulled from sale at Glenwood Middle School. Dairy testing showed that the milk was diluted with pasteurized water used to flush processing equipment.

Howard County Health Department officials are still awaiting state lab results for tests performed on a sample of the milk.

The Howard County Board of Education bought back land on Ducketts Lane in Elkridge on Feb. 1 for $2.64 million. The county had previously owned the same parcel of land, which it sold to a developer in 2002 for $827,000.

A local teacher teamed up with a PTA mom, and together they created a six-week program to help the Chin-speaking employees of Coastal Sunbelt Produce learn basic English skills. Savage has seen an influx of Chin families since 2007, as many of the families are refugees of their native Burma.
