Laurel Mayor, Council Sworn Into office

After an , the City of Laurel officially swore in the mayor and council this past week.

As previously reported, all incumbent candidates won their reelection bids.  The council added one new member, Hayes Edward Ricks, who joined re-elected Council members Frederick Smalls, Donna Crary and Michael Leszcz, Council member Valerie Nicholas, reports the Laurel Leader. Ricks was elected to the Ward 1 council seat vacated by four-term Council member Janis Robison, who stepped down due to health reasons.

Addiction Treatment Center Reopens on Main Street

The former addiction treatment center along Main Street reopened this past week after closing for seven months.

The facility is Prince George’s County’s only co-ed residential treatment center, according to The Gazette. But it was forced to close earlier this year when the county pulled its contract. The center, which has been serving the community for 37 years, has reopened thanks to a merger with Hope House, a substance abuse treatment facility in Crownsville.

In addition, the facility has undergone $36,000 worth of renovation, much of it donated from local businesses and organizations.

Annual Reindeer Run Kicks Off

The 10th annual Reindeer Run 5K kicked off this past  Saturday, and more than 300 participants raised $10,000 for Sarah’s House, a Fort Meade nonprofit that serves 500 families in need each year with daily meals, housing and counseling, according to The Gazette.

The run was started to memorialize Tom Linsenmeyer committed suicide in 2000 at the age of 18.
