Five Arrests in Friday Night Sobriety Checkpoint

Operation Checkpoint Strike Force was in full operation along the 100 block of Washington Blvd Friday night as members from the Laurel Police Department set up a sobriety check point along the road looking for impaired driving infractions. Police made at least five arrests.

The operation was a partnership with the the Laurel Police Department, the Laurel Police Auxiliary, and the Department of Public Works. Mayor Craig Moe was also on hand during the checkpoint on Friday.  

Checkpoint Strike Force is a state wide funded program through the Maryland State Highway Administration, and is aimed at keeping the roads safe and free of impaired drivers.  

“Anybody that we take off the road is successful," Laurel Police Chief Rich McLaughlin said in a statement.

Police set up shop for more than three hours, and stopped 1,171 including the  five arrests for driving while intoxicated and one arrest for drugs and alcohol.

The next planned checkpoint is on September 17.
