Former Laurel Police Officer Sentenced for Teen Sex Abuse

Edward Schmitt was sentenced to four years.

A Howard County judge has sentenced a former Laurel police officer to four years in prison for secretly taping a 15-year-old girl undressing.

Circuit Court Judge Dianne O. Leasure found Edward Charles Schmitt, 38, of North Laurel, guilty of child sex abuse in March, ruling that although Schmitt did not sexually touch the girl, the daughter of his then-girlfriend, his actions exploited her, according to the Laurel Leader.

Schmitt, formerly a Laurel police officer for 11 years, will serve his sentence concurrently with a seven-year federal court charge. He admitted on June 14 to receiving child pornography, according to the Leader. Schmitt was sentenced on Aug. 1.
