Hazmat Spill at Laurel UPS Center

Prince George's County Fire/EMS respond to fire caused by chemical spill.

A small fire caused by a hazmat spill erupted at a UPS facility in West Laurel early Monday, according to Prince George’s County Fire/EMS.

The incident happened at about 2:15 a.m. at the UPS Customer Center along the 14800 block of Sweitzer Lane, according to officials.

Firefighters discovered a package of nitric acid had spilled and caught fire, according to Mark Brady, a Fire/EMS spokesman. In addition, a second package containing flammable liquid also burned. According to Brady, a hazmat team neutralized the acid with additional cleanup from a contractor.

One responding personnel was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries, Brady said. In addition, a firefighter was sent to the hospital for hypertension.
