UPDATE: Juvenile Charged With Arson After Doormat Burns in South Laurel

The suspect is accused of starting a fire outside of an apartment on Contee Road.

Prince George's County officials say a juvenile was arrested and charged with arson Thursday after a doormat was set on fire in South Laurel earlier this week.

The teenager, whose name has not been released, is not considered a suspect in the recent series of suspicious fires across the Laurel area, according to a statement from the Prince George's County Fire Department.

Authorities said the incident occurred on Tuesday around 10:20 p.m. when a doormat was intentionally set on fire outside of a first floor apartment in the 8700 block of Contee Road.

According to the PGFD, Prince George's County Police stopped an individual the next day "believed to have been connected to a vandalism complaint that occurred in the same area of the fires."

Officers reportedly detained the teen until investigators from the Office of the Fire Marshal were able to question him. He was arrested the following day and charged with first degree arson, authorities said, with possible additional charges pending.

"The quick arrest is a direct result of the increased enforcement efforts in the Laurel area where public safety officials are searching for a suspect responsible for over $600,000 in fire loss caused by recent intentionally set fires," the department's statement read.

Officials are still searching for the peson or people responsible for the other fires. The City of Laurel is offering a $10,000 reward for a tip leading to an arrest in the case.

Fire officials are also asking residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activitiy—including suspect and vehicle descriptions, if possible—to 911.
