Laurel Crime: Man Attacks Officers, Woman Fleeing DUI Stop Hits Pole

A rundown of recent arrests and police responses.

The following is a rundown of notable arrests and police responses in the City of Laurel from May 19-25, 2013. Incident details are provided by the Laurel Police Department. Arrests do not necessarily indicate convictions.

Monday, May 20

SHOPLIFTING | 200-BLK Fort Meade Road: A 56-year-old man was arrested for shoplifting at the Home Depot store.

WARRANT ARREST | 700-BLK West Street: A patrol officer spotted a 23-year-old man whom he knew to have an open warrant for 1st Degree Assault. The man was arrested.

FRAUD | 14100-BLK Baltimore Avenue: A 19-year-old woman was arrested at the Navy Federal Credit Union for attempting to fraudulently attempting to withdraw $4200 from the bank.

ASSIST OTHER AGENCY | Baltimore Avenue at Cypress Street: Prince George’s County Police contacted Laurel Police and advised that they just had a robbery within their jurisdiction and gave suspect description. LPD officers observed a vehicle driving in the area of Cypress Street with three occupants that matched the description of the robbery suspects. After observing a traffic violation, officers from LPD initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. PGPD responded with the victim, who positively identified all three suspects. The three suspects were arrested by PGPD.

Wednesday, May 22

DUI ARREST | 700-BLK Montgomery Street, 9:05 p.m.: Officers responded to the area for the report of a person driving the wrong way around the park. Officers responded and observed a naked male screaming from the vehicle. Upon contacting the driver—later identified as a 51-year-old Laurel resident—officers recognized he was under the influence of PCP. He was arrested for DUI.

Thursday, May 23

DUI ARREST | Bowie Road at Washington Boulevard, 2:07 a.m.: Officers observed a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the road. Officers conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle and upon contacting the driver—a 24-year-old woman—suspected her to be driving under the influence of alcohol. During the traffic stop, the suspect fled the scene in the vehicle attempting to elude officers. While fleeing the scene, she struck a pole. Officers observed the suspect climbing from the window of the disabled vehicle and fleeing the scene on foot. She was apprehended and arrested after a brief foot pursuit.

DOMESTIC ASSAULT | 9112 Elaine Court, 3:48 a.m.: Officers responded to the area for a domestic. Officers observed injuries on a male at the residence. A 35-year-old woman was arrested for assault.

Friday, May 24

TAMPERING WITH AUTO ARREST | 200-Block Sixth Street: A Laurel Police detective observed a subject—later identified as a 33-year-old man—looking inside of vehicles and pulling on the door handles in an effort to gain entry to the vehicles. Patrol officers responded and arrested the suspect. A search of his person yielded multiple pieces of property suspected to be stolen from vehicles in the area.

TRESPASSING ARREST | 15100 Baltimore Avenue: Officers responded to Azteca for a 24-year-old subject who was becoming disorderly and refusing to leave the bar. Officers contacted the man and while attempting to arrest him for trespassing, another 24-year-old man began assaulting Laurel Police officers in an attempt to prevent the arrest of the first suspect. Both subjects were arrested.

Saturday, May 25

THEFT ARREST | 14800-Block Baltimore Avenue: Officers responded to Wells Fargo for the report of a stolen iPhone. An employee stated a customer—a 36-year-old man—entered an employee restroom inside the bank and stole the employee’s cell phone which had been left in the bathroom. Officers used another bank employee’s iPhone to track the stolen iPhone to a location in Laurel. Additional officers responded to that location and observed a vehicle being driven by a man who matched the description of the suspect given by the victim. Officers initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle. During the stop, the officers at Wells Fargo called the cell phone which began ringing inside of the vehicle. The suspect was arrested for theft and the cell phone was returned to the victim.

INDECENT EXPOSURE ARREST | Washington Boulevard at Montgomery Street: Officers responded to the area for the report of a naked male walking along Washington Boulevard. Passing motorists and patrons of local businesses called to report the subject. Officers located the 27-year-old subject and arrested him for indecent exposure.
