Laurel Man Charged in July 4 Murder

Suspect charged in D.C. homicide.

A Laurel man has been charged in the Fourth of July shooting death of a Washington, DC, teen, according to Metropolitan Police.

Calvin Shaw, 22, of Laurel, has been charged with first-degree murder stemming from an incident last week along the 5000 block of First Street in North West, reports The Washington Post.

According to police, the incident occurred at about 8 p.m. Wednesday when a group gathered along the block. Three men, all carrying handguns, approached the group on foot and suddenly opened fire, according to the Post. Witnesses said at first the group thought the gunshots were fireworks.

Four people were wounded and Crevontai Key, 19, was killed.

Shaw is the only person to be charged in the shooting so far. Witnesses reported seeing Shaw pull out a .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol and fire, according to the Post.

Shaw is being held pending a preliminary hearing on July 19.
