Laurel Police Blotter: Granny Gets Bamboozled, Police Search For Cricket Robber

The following was provided by the Laurel Police Department.

Laurel Police are investigating an apparent scam involving a 90-year-old woman who was cheated out of $5,300.

According to police, the incident happened Aug. 11., when the victim received a telephone call that her grandson was in jail over a traffic accident and the person calling said he was the public defender representing her grandson.

According to police, the suspect told the victim she needed to send a total of $5,300 to pay for the damaged vehicle and for personal injuries to get her grandson out of jail.

The suspect told the victim she would be reimbursed by the insurance company. Police said, the victim completed the transaction through Western Union. The next day the grandson called to speak to his grandmother and learned about the scam and told her grandmother he was not in an accident or arrested by police. The telephone used by the suspect indicated it was used in Canada. 

Police Search for Cricket Wireless Store Armed Robber

Laurel Police continue to look for a man who robbed the Cricket Wireless Store Aug. 17.

According to police, the incident happened along the 14900 Block Baltimore Avenue. A man entered the store looking at cell phones and after a customer left the store the man approached an employee, displaying a handgun and robbed the store. No one was injured, according to police. The suspect fled out the rear of the store in an unknown direction.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5’10”, 190 pounds, 35 to 45 years of age wearing a gray tee shirt, black sunglasses, Baltimore Ravens hat, blue jeans, black shoes and armed with a handgun.

An 18-year old Laurel man was arrested for shoplifting at Macy’s Department Store. Items stolen were all recovered. Defendant was released on a criminal citation pending the court date.

1000 Block Tenth Street     

Garmin GPS system stolen from a parked SUV.

500 Block Seventh Street      

Sansung S150 camera stolen from a purse at Stanley Memorial Library

14200 Block Baltimore Avenue      

Nike tennis shoes and a Roller Blade bag stolen from Modell’s.

8300 Block Ashford Boulevard   

Garmin GPS system was stolen from a parked SUV truck.

300 Block Montgomery Street      

Craftsman’s weed eater was stolen from a parked truck.

08/14/11   

14600 Block Cambridge Circle     

Garmin GPS system was stolen from a parked car.

08/16/11   

7900 Block Braygreen Road    

Six vehicles were broken into and the following property was taken: two Garmin GPS systems, Mio GPS system, Oakley sunglasses and a cell phone charger. Police will be viewing a video to attempt to identify the suspect/s/.

Air conditioning unit stolen from a home.

STOLEN AUTOS

08/11/11   

100 Block Sharon Court     

Unknown person attempted to steal a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle. The suspect damaged the ignition but was unable to start the motorcycle.

08/13/11   

8100 Block Fenwick Court     

2005 Yamaha motorcycle , blue in color with Maryland tag D52977 was stolen.

 

BURGLARIES

08/15/11   

900 Block Montrose Avenue     

Entry gained by smashing the glass window. Taken was a small amount of U.S. Currency.

08/17/11   

400 Block Washington Boulevard    

Entry gained through a glass door. A small amount of money was taken. The crime was captured on video and police will be viewing the video to identify the suspect.
