A man was taken into custody Sunday after making threats against Howard County police that prompted an evacuation in part of Laurel, according to a statement from the Howard County Police Department.
Benjamin Parsons, 34, of the 6300 block of Eastern Star Way in Clarksville, was charged with one count of making a false statement regarding a destructive device and one count of threatening arson.
He was being held at the Howard County Detention Center on $100,000 bond.
approximately 4:40 p.m. on Sunday, police said Parsons walked into the Howard County Police Department's Southern District station at 11226 Scaggsville Road in Laurel and referenced possible explosive devices in and around the building.
The police station, adjacent firehouse, several nearby businesses and a local strip mall were evacuated "in an abundance of caution" so fire marshals, police and explosives experts could search the vicinity, the statement from police said. One business reopened around 8 p.m., according to ABC 2 News.
Traffic on Scaggsville Road/MD Route 216 near US 29 was reportedly impacted due to police activity in the area.
Authorities did not find any explosives, according to the statement, which said that police continued to provide services throughout the investigation.
Parsons is scheduled to appear in a preliminary hearing about the charges against him on June 17 in Howard County District Court.
