Update: Officer Struck in Laurel

Police officer struck by a vehicle while chasing suspect near Route 1 sustained non-life threatening injuries.

A Prince George's County Police officer was struck by a vehicle near Baltimore Avenue in Laurel late Friday and taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to county police.

The officer, not a Laurel Police officer as previously reported, had been chasing a suspect on foot along the westbound intersection of Route 1 and Route 198 when they were struck by a car. According to police, the officer was struck after slipping from an embankment; his right leg was injured by the car.

The suspect fled the scene on foot. The driver of the striking vehicle stayed on the scene until police and medics arrived who transported the officer to a local hospital. As of early Saturday morning, no charges had been filed against the driver.

A Prince George's County Police officer was struck by a vehicle late Friday night while chasing a suspect along Route 1/Baltimore Avenue, according to reports.

The incident happened shortly before 11 p.m. near the intersection of westbound Route 1 and Route 198. According to reports, an officer was apparently chasing a suspect when he was struck by a vehicle traveling near the northbound lanes along Route 1. The suspect fled the scene on foot and was last seen headed north on Route 1 as police continue to search the area.

More than a dozen police cruisers and Fire/EMS cars clustered along the scene of the accident rerouting traffic from Route 198 to Route 1 while medics made their way to assist the officer. It remains unclear what condition the officer is in or if he was inside a vehicle when he was struck.
