According to police, a 30-year-old female identified as the child's mother was dropping off her baby and her older 3-year-old child at a residential home.  Before she got out of the car with the infant in her hands, the mother did not put the car into park and it began to roll backward as the older child got out of the car and ran behind the vehicle.

Police said at that point the mother also ran behind the car in an attempt to save the older child but the car struck all three of them.

Paramedics from Prince George's Fire/EMS administered CPR on the youngest infant but the baby was pronounced dead en route to a local  hospital, said police.

Neighbors who witnessed the event described a horrific scene in which the mother was holding what appeared to be a lifeless infant yelling, "Someone please help!"

"I heard this loud scream," said Melvin Smith, who lives across the street from where the collision occurred.  " [I heard,] 'Someone please help. My baby, she's not breathing," he said.

Smith said he performed CPR on the infant for as long as seven minutes before Fire/EMS arrived.

"The baby was not moving," he said.

Neighbor Karen Johnson said she peeked out her window after hearing screaming and saw a woman pacing backward and holding a baby.

"The infant looked lifeless," she said.

Pam Harrison ran from her home to assist the woman and called 911.  She said that when she approached the mother and child, she saw a lot of blood.

The mother and male child were sent to the hospital.  Police could give no update on their status.  Neighbors said the boy did not appear to be injured.
