South Laurel Shooting Marks 19th Homicide in Prince George's County

Police are investigating the death of a man gunned down at a South Laurel basketball court Thursday evening.

Maryland National Capital Park Police are investigating the death of a man  gunned down on a basketball court in South Laurel Thursday evening, marking the 19th criminal homicide in Prince George’s County this year.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. when county patrol officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 13000 block of Mistletoe Spring Road near Route 197.  Upon arriving, police said they found an adult male victim suffering from a gunshot wound.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting occurred at an apartment complex about a mile from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

Cpl. Clinton Copeland, a Prince George's County Police spokesman, said police discovered the man's body on a basketball court.  It was eventually determined that Park Police have jurisdiction over the homicide because it took place on park property.

The incident marks the 19th homicide in the county this year and second murder in the last week.  On Monday,  a 27-year old Suitland man was gunned down in Oxon Hill.
