Anne Arundel County Councilman Sentenced to Five Months in Prison

Councilman Daryl Jones will report to jail on Jan. 23 for failing to file tax returns between 2002-2006.

Anne Arundel County Councilman and Severn resident Daryl Jones (D-District 1) was sentenced to five months in prison Monday night for failing to file 35 tax returns between 2002-2006.

Jones' hearing lasted about an hour and he was seen wiping tears from his eyes as his sentence was announced. 

Jones , and said the years of evasion occurred during a particularly tough time in his life.

At the hearing Monday night, federal Judge Ellen Hollander sentenced Jones to five months in prison. The maximum sentence for the offense is one year. 

Jones, who is in his first of two years on the council, told The Baltimore Sun that he was going to do some thinking before deciding what to do with his council seat. According to the council’s charter, it’s within his rights to stay on.

However, County Council Chairman Dick Ladd and Councilman John Grasso (R-District 2) have both said they believe he should step down for the sake of his constituents.

Jones will begin serving his five-month sentence on Jan. 23.
