Changes Ahead for Howard County Administration

One long-time media professional is joining the administration's staff as two members leave to take new jobs.

Former WBAL News Director Mark Miller is coming to Howard County to join the administration as the new press secretary, managing the Office of Public Information.

“I am thrilled to have someone with Mark’s media experience join the County,” County Executive Ken Ulman said in a statement released Monday. “Mark understands firsthand how critically important effective communication is, and he is extremely well-versed in both the old and new world media.”

Miller, who will begin Nov. 7, joins the county administration as Director of Public Communication Kevin Enright leaves government to join the University of Maryland’s School of Medicine.

Director of Policy and Legislative Affairs David Nitkin will take on additional duties as the Director of Communications.

“I thank Kevin for his tireless work and skillful management and decision-making during his time in the county,” Ulman said in the statement.  “He is the consummate professional, and I wish him well in his new position."

Miller said he was “honored” to be joining Ulman’s team.

“I truly am looking forward to working with Executive Ulman and the many bright, hardworking people he has surrounded himself with in the county,” Miller said in the statement.

Ulman also announced that Candace Dodson-Reed, director of constituent and community affairs has been promoted to deputy chief of staff.

“Candace’s experience, interpersonal skills and close ties to so many in Howard County make her a natural to assume more responsibilities as we look to make even more achievements in the County,” Ulman said in a statement.

Dodson-Reed takes this new position as Ian Kennedy begins his new job as Communications Director at The Horizon Foundation.

Au contraire. Who's to say Enright's move wasn't pre-arranged for him months ago, making room for Miller? Who better to have on your team for a gubernatorial run than the former news director of one of the most powerful AM stations this side of the Mississippi?

Who's better? Thousands of people. But even if this fellow was a marketing genius, wouldn't the campaign have hired him directly? Usually Ulman offers his campaign staff the cushy gov't jobs after he gets elected, not before. What about the departure of Ulman's special assistant?
