Laurel Martin Luther King Celebration

The city of Laurel and Laurel Clergy Association will observe the Martin Luther King  Holiday a few hours early on Sunday, Jan. 16 with the fourth annual "Sing for King" celebration.

The free event, with concert and readings, will feature the annual favorite, "Trilogy of Dreams," by local composer Dr. Mack Statham. Also to be performed are Statham's "All I Want," Moses Hogan's "I'm Gonna Sing 'Til the Spirit Moves in My Heart" and Dr. Barbara Baker's arrangement of "There Is a Balm in Gilead." Dr. Baker, a nationally prominent choral conductor who formerly led the choir program at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, will direct. Also performing are brass and timpani instrumentalists, most from the U.S. Army Field Band. A dessert reception will follow the concert.

A free-will offering will support the Martin Luther King Memorial, to be unveiled this year on the National Mall, and local charities.
