Howard County Urges Drivers to Slow Down as Road Resurfacing Begins

Crews will be resurfacing roads through mid-September.

The Howard County Department of Public Works announced it would begin a countywide road-resurfacing project next week and the county is urging drivers to be extra cautious around the work crews.

The project is slated to be complete by mid-September, and will seal cracks in roadways and create a uniform skid-resistant surface.

The department is offering these tips to drivers approaching the work zones:

  • Always follow the speed limit to allow ample braking time to slow or stop when a paver, a roller or a street sweeper is ahead
  • Cross the new road surface only if you must.  When you do, cross straight over and do not make sharp turns or you will damage the new surface.

Approximately 45 miles of road will be resurfaced or paved throughout the county, according to Howard County Bureau of Highways Chief Bill Malone.

Malone said resurfacing crews will not work on busy roads during rush hours, and some of the busiest roads will be worked on overnight.
