Laurel Council Approves Annexation

City annexed plot of land owned by Presbyterian church.

The City of Laurel is about to get four acres larger.

This week City Council members approved the annexation of 4.3 acres owned by near the intersection of Cherry Lane and Route 197.

The annexation would allow the church to reclassify a land zoning designation for a small patch of wooded area adjacent to the church.

Earlier this summer, residents from Patuxent Glen, a roughly 132 single-family home community that abuts the church property, on the zoning, fearing it would allow the property to be developed and disrupt their neighborhood.

The Council has kept busy this summer annexing plots of land from unincoporated parts of Laurel. Earlier this summer, the C of 70 acres of property along Van Duson Road south of Contee Road.

That annexation would bring the city to the , a 2,200-acre mixed-use development located in an unincorporated area. City officials said Konterra would make the 70 acres more valuable as the future site of a residential development.
